Overview

Cover Florida Enrollment began Jan. 5, 2009 and it offers health-care coverage to the state's 3.8 million uninsured. The Cover Florida benefits are limited and the plans are buyer be where when comparing to a major medical individual and group plans.

The new Cover Florida network has six private insurance companies, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Medica Health, and Total Health Choice plans that are offered in all 67 Florida counties, offering 25 plans with an average monthly premium of $155.

The Cover Florida program gives Floridians access to more affordable health insurance options. Created without tax dollars, it is voluntary for both individuals and employers.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida and United Health Care will be offered in all 67 Florida counties. In addition, four counties will have further options.

Broward County will have two additional options:  Medica Health Plan of Florida and Total Health Choice.
Miami-Dade County will have three additional options:  Medica Health Plan of Florida, Total Health Choice and JMH Health Plan.

Flagler and Volusia counties will have one additional carrier, Florida Health Care Plans.

There are a total of 27 creative health insurance products and each carrier offers at minimum two benefit options. Catastrophic and hospital coverage, and one without hospital coverage. Some of the cover Florida plans have a robust set of benefits that include coverage for preventive services, screenings, office visits, as well as office surgery, urgent care, hospital coverage, emergency care, prescription drugs, durable medical equipment, and diabetic supplies. In addition, the cover Florida plans provides the opportunity to choose primary and preventive care instead of costly visits to emergency rooms.

How do I enroll into the Cover Florida Plan?

Enrollment is simple but not electronic. It is recommended that you speak with one of our agents as eligibility does have strict rules and restrictions in order to qualify.

Who is Eligible?

Applicants of the Cover Florida plans must be a resident of the state and be between ages 19 to 64 and must have been without health insurance for at least six months – even if there are pre-existing health conditions. 

Floridians may also be eligible to purchase Cover Florida plans under the following conditions.

Loss of benefits under COBRA.

Death of, or divorce from, a spouse who has provided employer-sponsored health benefits.

You have lost a job that provided employer-sponsored health benefits.

Are there any Pre-Existing Exclusion?
 
When an enrollee has a pre-existing exclusion put on his/her policy that exclusion applies to any claims in relation to that condition for the first 12 months of the policy. That means the exclusion includes prescription drug coverage, doctor visits, hospital coverage, and etcetera that relate to the pre-existing condition would not be covered.

Is my Cover Florida Health Plan portable?

Yes, your Cover Florida plans are portable from one employer to another because they are individual policies.  Employers may voluntarily share in the cost of the plan with their employees or may assist employees with a payroll deduction, providing a pre-tax benefit for the employee and a payroll tax break for the employer.
